Gamama Bread

My great-grandmother’s recipe. Great-Grandma…Gamama…get it? Well, that’s what we called her. This bread is nostalgic. It’s moist and dense, a little sweet, and well…it’s wheat bread. And I don’t eat wheat bread. But I eat this.

Prep Time: 2 1/2 hours
Cook Time: 30 minutes
Serving Size: 2 loaves?
From the kitchen of: Nellie Story

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup milk

  • 1/4 cup honey

  • 2 tablespoons shortening

  • 1/2 cup warm water

  • 1 packet dry yeast

  • 1 teaspoon sugar

  • 1 2/3 cup white flour

  • 1 1/3 cup whole wheat

  • 1 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Scald milk; add shortening and honey. Allow shortening to melt. Let mixture stand in cold water until lukewarm. Put in large bowl; set aside.

  2. Mix together water, yeast and sugar. Add to lukewarm milk mixture.

  3. Add white flour and salt.

  4. Add whole wheat flour and knead. Let rise until double in size, about 1 hour.

  5. Divide and put into greased loaf pans. Let rise until double in size again.

  6. Bake at 350°F until crust is brown or tapping gives hollow sound (about 30 min?).
